I can't believe I drove here with your sentimental garbage and a flimsy plan to walk away unscathed
I can see you in the kitchen singing over dirty dishes. I knock three times and then I run away
Yesterday you called me so I'm lying on your sofa. You're next to me with your hand on my shin.
In the place it rested is an indelible impression like a ghostly kiss from a phantom limb
I said, "Wait." You said, "Why."
Just this once would it kill you to lie if only for my piece of mind?
A week ago the wildfire started on the north side. Your car was on and the keys were locked inside.
I could not be surer that if I left your side I'd lose you and the thought of that made me lose my mind.
I reached out. You pulled away. I'm ashamed that I was so afraid. As if you weren't already gone anyway.
"Baby, did you miss me?" echoes in the bedsheets, breathing hard with my head on your heart.
I spent the last year bracing, facing the horizon, for the awesome wave that I saw from the start.
